Member of Bury Athenaeum and capital footbal player. He was educated at Mr Ireland's Commercial Academy, The Wilde, Bury and at the Allesley Park College, near Coventry. On leaving school he was employed in the hat business, but not finding the work congenial, he departed from the port of London on teh ship Oroya and sailed to Adelaide arriving there on May 10 1889. About 1889 Ernest was engaged in fruit farming on the Murray River and was later engaged in the surveyor's department in the construction of a railway.
