I am connected to the DUXBURY family through my husband. It is a rather complicated
story, and am wondering if you may know of this family.
Whilst researching my husband's family tree, I got back to his
great-grandfather, Richard HARDGRAVES and from there seemed to hit a brick
wall. There are a number of "family stories" which I had noted but never
totally dismissed. At times these stories have led me in the right
direction.
On his marriage certificate (Australian), Richard states that he was born
in Blackburn Lancashire, and that his father was John HARDGRAVES and his
mother was Alice DUXBURY. John Hardgraves was supposedly a Mechanic. When
I was trying to find the marriage of John and Alice, I was told the first
family story, from a few different family members. It seems that Alice had
a drinking problem and was a "social misfit". The story goes that her
husband put Alice and her two sons on a ship bound for Australia. Whilst
some elements of this story may be true, I can't understand why a man would
send two near working age boys off toAustralia.
According to one source, they came to Australia in 1864, which would make
Richard about 8 years of age and his brother James, nine or ten years.
I have never found the marriage of John and Alice.
I had made a note of an Alice DUXBURY in the 1851 census of Blackburn.
She was living with a Joseph Smith, a Hand Weaver. Also living at this
address (19 Mt. Pleasant) was an Ann Edmundson his daughter and her
husband, and an Alice YATES and her husband John and their three children.
Alice was a grand-daughter, unmarried, 16 years old and a Weaver. Her
birth place was Blackburn.
I kept this Census entry in case it was in fact, my Alice DUXBURY.
In 1882, Alice remarries in Brisbane, Queensland. On the marriage
certificate, she states that she was born in Blackburn and that her parents
were Christopher DUXBURY, a stonemason, and Elizabeth HOWARTH.
I have found her baptism in the IGI. She was baptised on 22 May 1836 at
Blackburn Over Darwen. I also found her brother, Oliver Hargreaves DUXBUR
who was baptised on 22 July 1838 at Blackburn Presby. Church.
I could not find Elizabeth HOWARTH. On Alice's death certificate it gives
her mother as Elizabeth HARDGRAVES. On her admission into a Nursing Home
before her death, her father is named as Christopher DUXBURY, General
Dealer, and her mother is named as Elizabeth HARGREAVES.
Now my interest is really kicking in. Why can't I find Elizabeth HOWARTH's
birth.
Why is she now being called "HARGREAVES"? And why did she call her son,
Oliver Hargreaves Duxbury?
In the 1881 Census of Little Harwood, I found Oliver Hargreaves DUXBURY and
his family living at Whalley Banks. He was a Cotton Weaver. I also found
an Elizabeth
DUXBURY living with a David PROCTOR, Cotton Weaver, and his wife Elizabeth
and children. Elizabeth was 71 years of age and an Annuitant. I made a
note that this could be my Elizabeth DUXBURY living with her daughter.
This is as far has I could get until recently, when I received a phone call
from a lady living some 300 klms away who was a PROCTOR. A professional
researcher had told her that we may be connected. We are indeed!!
According to this contact, Elizabeth's father was in actual fact a James
HARGREAVES who along with his brother John, owned most of the coal mines in
the Burnley area. Elizabeth was born in 1810, her mother dying in
childbirth. She was brought up by a family called HAWORTH. Elizabeth was
sent to a boarding school at Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, the fees being paid
by her father. He apparently told her that she would never want for
anything. James died in 1830.
Apparently someone did a little fiddling with his Will, as Elizabeth was
left with nothing but a small annuity which would last until she died. She
was always quite bitter about this, according to her family. After she
left school, she trained to be a Dressmaker and set up business in
Blackburn where she met Christopher DUXBURY who was a master builder.
After their marriage they decided to go to America which was opening up at
that time. They were wrecked on the Banks of Newfoundland and were picked
up by a passing ship and brought back to England. They were given tickets
to go again.
Christopher wanted to go but Elizabeth did not - she used to tell her
daughter, Elizabeth PROCTOR that there was no back door. According to this
source, Christopher started a business as a builder at Birkenhead Docks
near Liverpool. They had two sons and two daughters. They were Alice,
Oliver, Elizabeth and Thomas.
What an interesting story! I am now starting to piece things together. It
does not help me with my Alice DUXBURY and the so-called John HARDGRAVE
I had some time ago begun to wonder if there was in fact a marriage. Alice
would have been about 17 years old when her first son James was born.
I feel that maybe she did not marry and that her two sons are illegitimate.
(Of course, I may be doing her a grave injustice here.) She has used the
family name HARGREAVES but spelt it differently ( maybe a new start in
Australia?)
According to my new source, although Alice eventually lived a stone's throw
away from her PROCTOR nephew and his family, she wanted nothing to do with
her family.
It all makes for interesting reading - but I am still no closer to find
more on Christopher DUXBURY and his family.

The Blackburn census in 1851 showed William and Cecilia with 7 children. Between my Christopher and his sister, Levinia, there was about a six year difference. We thought Cecilia could be his second wife. Someone agreed to check the Cathedral in Manchester. I have a copy of William's marriage to Mary (Ann) Heap on October 1, 1832.in the presence of Thomas Parry and William Williams.
So the first six children were William and Mary Ann's.
