Title: Kathleen Duxbury
My father,s father drowned when he was 2 or 3 years old. His mother died when he was a young teenager and he became a ward of the state of New York. As a child I often asked my
father why his family didn't take him in, as I recall there was never an
answer to this question, I assumed there wasn't any family to do so. As
an orphan he was fortunate, the State of New York (which took possession
of the family farm) sent him to the Pacific Northwest on the "Orphan
Train", this was during the Great Depression. He came of age on a "dude'
ranch, I have photos of him in full cowboy dress on a ranch somewhere in
Montana. He had some happy times there. After that there was WWII, he
was with the U.S Armed forces all over Europe. My father was a
gentleman, a wonderful happy man but, a man of few words. He would never
talk about WWII and I believe his childhood memories were bittersweet.
Kathleen Duxbury Yeaw, August 1999.
