Winifred (Buxton) Gosling wrote (before 1995):
'My Grandfather, Moses Perry.
Children. Miriam, Julia, Emily Ellen (Mum) and a son who died in his early 20s I think.
I don't know Grandma's name but she was held in high esteem by anyone who spoke of her. She was a very devoted wife and a lovely Grandma from the little I knew of her.
Grandad had a very good job as a foreman in a steel works but left it to become a Congregational Minister at a far less salary. When Grandma died he went to live with Miriam and her husband Tom Gabbert(?) as they had no children. Tom did some lecturing at Sheffield University and quite a lot of private coaching of students who sometimes lived at their home if they were from abroad. Miriam and Tom went away for a six-week holiday every year and then Grandad came to stay with us. I think he also was in his 90s when he died. He could speak and read both Greek and Arabic.'
Extract from Congregational Year Book 1924:
'PERRY, Moses, was born June 14, 1832, in Shropshire. In August, 1859, he became a London City Missionary, which work he continued until 1866, when he was invited to take the oversight of Oak Road Chapel, Leeds.
In March, 1873, he accepted a call to Sowerby Congregational Church, where he remained until June, 1889. During the last year of his pastorate there, he was President of Halifax district of the Yorkshire Congregational Union. He then went to Whittington Moor, Chesterfield (1889 - 1907), where he ministered for about seventeen years.
He passed to his rest January 3, 1923, at the age of ninety.'
