Arnold was a staunch Congregationalist, married Mary Haworth (1880-1963) whose mother was a Jepson - all good Darwen names - left Darwen and went to work as a journalist and newspaper editor in Manchester before retiring to Leicestershire in 1939. We have a delightful original Illingworth cartoon which celebrated that moment - showing him with a mobile phone at his ear long before they became the norm!
