William MIllcrests Obituary :
A Lakeland Host - Death of Mr William Milcrest
We record with much regret the death, which occurred on Thursday, of Mr William Milcrest of t he Manor Park Hotel, Keswick, and formerly of the Glenridding Hotel, Patterdale. Mr Milcrest , who was one of the best known and most popular hotel proprietors in the Lake District, die d suddenly as the result of a seizure in his 79th year. Mr and Mrs Milcrest celebrated thei r golden wedding in 1933, they having been married at St Andrew's Church, Penrith, on 17th No vember of that year. For thirty years before going to Keswick, they lived at the head of Ulls water, but at both Glenridding and Keswick they maintained the highest tradition of hospitali ty, and their hotels have been known to and valued by thousands of visitors. The severing o f this domestic partnership by death will be received with sincere regret by the many peopl e who held the Milcrest family in such high esteem.
Mr Milcrest was born at Kendal and he spent his early life at the County Hotel, Lancaster, wi th his uncle, Mr Samuel Ducksbury, whose name was widely known to visitors to the county town . It was there that he received his training in the career, which he was to adopt with such s uccess. Leaving Lancaster, he came to Penrith, where he was in the serice of the late Mr Edwa rd Parker, Carleton Hill, for nine years, and it was during that time that his marriage too k place. For a similar period following he was with the Ratcliffe family, who, when he firs t went to them, lived at Levens Hall. Later they moved about a good deal, Mr Milcrest accompa nying them.
Returning to Westmorland, Mr Milcrest was for some time with Mr Marshall, Patterdale Hall, an d it was when he left there that he took the Glenridding Hotel, which became so well known th roughout Lakeland.
It was in March 1897, that Mr Milcrest went to the Glenridding Hotel, and he remained there f or 30 years. He left eight years ago, after the disasterous burst in the dam at Keppel Cove T arn, when the torrent of water which swept down the fellside flooded the lower floors of th e hotel and members of the staff who slept in the basement narrowly escaped drowning.
Leaving Ullswater, Mr Milcrest bought the beautiful Manor House, Keswick, the home of the lat e Mr R D Marshall, who was lord of the manor at Castlerigg, a house standing in a magnificen t position above Keswick, overlooking Derwentwater, which had for some years been unoccupied . The mansion was adapted as a hotel and renamed Manor Park, and the family have resided ther e since, making the name of their new home as highly esteemed as that of the Glenridding Hote l with which they had such a long and honouable connection.
Mr Milcrest had not the time to take much part in public and social life, as he devoted himse lf almost wholly to the business. At Glenridding, however, he was greatly interested in the U llswater Foxhounds, and was himself a keen follower of the pack. He was on the committee of t he hunt and of the Ullswater Sheep Dog Trials.
He is survived by his wife and their five daughters, three of whom, the Misses A, M and N Mil crest, are at the hotel at Keswick. The two married daughters are Mrs H W Garnett, Altrincham , and Mrs Stanley J Pears, Kirkoswald. A son, Samuel Marshall Milcrest, died at the age of th irteen.
The funeral takes place this (Saturday) afternoon at Ullswater.
He is buried in Patterdale church yard.
Around 1902/3 he was in correspondance with his cousin William Ducksbury who had by then move d to Liverpool.
